Q: How in-depth the teaching experience is at Shoot Camp? A: Extremely. When you finish there, you will be able to walk onto a movie set anywhere and actually know what you are doing. They take you through some theory, but it is mostly hands-on which in my opinion, is the way to go. Which brings us to your next question...
A: You do it all! You will learn the parts of the camera and how the lens work in the first day or so. You will also meet the actors and learn about the casting process as well as what the different crew positions do. You will actually go and pick up the equipment you work with so that helps you learn the equipment use. You will have your hands in every aspect. You will be directing, camera assistant, sound mixer, boom operator, grip, dolly grip, craft services, special effects, lighting (grip), editing... I mean everything!!
A: WONDERFUL! Sorry, I can't say it better. They are the most knowledgable individuals I know in the business and they are there for you every step fo the way. Even now, I am working on my own film which I shoot next month and whenever I hit a wall, I know I can call them and they will be there to help me over it. They know that you are all students and learning the process and they take the time that's needed to explain to you fully what you need to know. I promise you that you will feel like a "family" when it is all over. It was really hard to leave.
A: Honestly... nothing. As I have been saying, they teach you everything. There is nothing I would do differently because I know I did everything I could to get the most of the experience and there is no other training I would request because they do go into every aspect of the process. They even touch a bit on marketing which is really a producers job, but they still give you a bit of insight into that.
A: Ask questions, and always be in the mix. I was one that had to know everything. I was always on the set when I wasnt's acutally directing. That way I could watch and see what exactly went on, plus I got to know all the jobs really well. Just be in the the center of things all the time and ask questions. They are more then willing to answer any questions you have. They will explain stuff to you, but if you still don't understand or something comes up ask them. I live by the motto... the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask. They are all wonderful and I promise you, you will be able to walk away with the knowledge and skills you need to learn to make your own film.
Final Comments: If you have a minute, you can take a look at my website and you can see that I did actually take what I learned from Shoot Camp and I'm applying it to my own film. Another camp member, Kris Foster, wrote the script and is also helping me with this project. We are both taking our knowledge from Shoot Camp and putting it to work. I am proud of what I am doing and I know, without a doubt, that I would never have been able to do it without experience at Shoot Camp. It's a MUST for all starting filmmakers!! I hope you decide to go because it is definitely worth it! Good luck and happy filmmaking!!
